It has come to my attention that I have been very negligent at updating my posts. I have been threatened by my oldest that she wants a hostile takeover. :). So even though I do not have consistent internet, I will do my best to give a quick and accurate update.
Hubby has been given the lead on his current project and that has kept him very busy. Even though he has had many challenges he has met them head on and so far has been triumphant. We did not go with him this time because of other commitments. It's been an interesting summer.
Child A is now in her junior year and looking forward to forensic anthropology. She has been looking thru so many college sites, I'm convinced that they are going to just start showing up with the material in paper form to keep her from slowing down their web pages! She is in the last stages of her braces and the teeth look great. And... she has started doing craft fairs and taking special orders for her homemade and crochet projects. It has been very good for her and she is getting a good start. She has a very large fair this fall and we are very excited.
Child B is now in fourth grade. He is turning out to be very engineering minded. His math and sciences are going best and his other subjects are good too. He will read almost anything he can get his hands on. He loves being outside and riding his bike.
Child C is now in second grade. She loves to be read to and is slowly warming up to reading to her younger sibling. They have an amazing bond that is fun to watch. Her biggest interest is in the kitchen with me. I always have an instant helper and she is getting real good at cutting and/or grating stuff for freezer storage.
Child D is in kindergarten. She is very inquisitive and full of energy. She loves to sit and do her school pages while I am working with the older ones. She has taken to following everyone around and helping whom ever will let her. She has a knack for presenting "gifts" to everyone who walks thru the door.
As for me and life in general, I have been busy trying to keep everyone busy and helping with the various projects that are always going on. We were in the process of buying the house we are living in but there has been a snag in the deed transfer. Come to find out, it doesn't have a clear deed and so everything is on hold. That's ok...God must have better things in store. I have been attending a local gym for a while and I love it. It is nice to go sweat. But really the kiddos keep me very busy.
Nothing real exciting to announce but I really like to post. You just wouldn't believe it by my current track record. Have a wonderful night!!

A New Recipe
I ventured out to the dollar store in search for plastic cups for the bath time routine. Exciting, I know. But as I pulled up, the eldest said she thought she saw a bulk store. So we HAD to check it out. What a neat place. And I found new inspiration to post another recipe.
Taco Seasoning Mix
2TB chili powder 1/2tsp onion powder 1/2tsp oregano 1TB cumin
2tsp pepper 1/2tsp garlic powder 1/2tsp red pepper flakes
1tsp paprika 2 1/2tsp salt
I must give a few other tweaks. I do not use the full amount of salt. We are not used to adding salt so please adjust that to your taste. Also, this is for one batch of meat, give or take. I tend to make this in multiples of 20-50. I am very careful to keep excess moisture out of the mix. Because there isn't preservatives in here, it will need to be spooned out. It will not shake well. Add as much or as little as you need to each batch of meat.
I'm not sure where this mix originated from. Plus, I tend to tweak things so much, it may or may not be the original anyway. :) I love this mix. I hope you do too. While we were going crazy over the stuff we were finding, a few ladies were giggling at our enthusiasm. Of course, we HAD to chat, and we found kindred spirits. :) Ideas were exchanged and "mom" encouraged me to post more recipes. I'm not sure why I don't. I love to cook. I'm passionate about finding the best things for our crew to eat, all within the allergy guidelines. And the budget. So...I thought I would share the taco mix that I use. It can be a little on the spicy side if you use a hotter chili powder. If heat is your thing, look for a habanero chili powder or a roasted chili powder. Frontier Brand has several options but if that is not available, Walmart or Meijer has generic chili powder as well.

Anna Maria Island
As I sit here, ready to write, I'm having a dilemma. Do I account for the beauty or entertain with the mishaps? Do I go into great detail or just give hints and let you find the gems later? So...true to my introverted personality (hahaha) I will give some glimpses into both adventures that we had this last weekend. :) :)
Anna Maria Island is a "local hideaway." The more people that you talk too, the better idea you will get of where to start. There is a public access area but once we explored a little, we found a semi private beach that was absolutely fabulous! In order to enjoy this area we had lunch at the local restaurant on the beach. We had a table where we had our toes in the sand the whole time. The food was great and the views were amazing. The Gulf of Mexico was calling for us to swim.
The water was so warm and calm. We stayed fairly close to the shore. The thought was that if we didn't venture too far out, the animals wouldn't venture too far in...right? Wrong!! Plenty of fish...they didn't concern me. But... the oldest two were checking out the shells and rocks on the floor and as the oldest stepped on a really cool one, it moved! Luckily it didn't sting because we quickly found out it was a small stingray. It was cool to watch from a distance. Then, as the younger ones and I were bobbing in the waves, I had a sharp "poke" that turned into one very intense sting. Wow. A jellyfish thought that I needed to move. His method did get me to move. It was almost comical watching me try to get out of the water and address the sting and not alarm the girls. The locals had a good giggle as we tried asking how to address the injury. They recommended we urinate on the wound. (enter my sarcastic "right") Since I didn't go into the emergency room I can't say if it was good advice or if they were just messing with us.
On the other side of the island, you overlook Tampa Bay. You just can't beat the views. We spotted a pelican, several dolphins, little jellyfish, and tons of tiny fish. We have been told that the wild peacocks are amazing but we never saw them. A long pier allowed us to get closer to the water without getting wet. The closer we got to sunset, the busier the water was. Apparently the heat of the day is way to hot for good dolphin sightings.
The whole island had this feeling of comfort and relaxation. The houses were bright and had huge plants that had wonderful colors as well. I even saw an aloe plant that was as tall as a grown person. We walked through some of it but also drove some. Parking was a challenge but once that hurdle was crossed, you were good to go. If for some reason the island loses it power of seduction, a close town offers a museum that houses the oldest manatee known. Maybe that is worth checking out. For me. I'm hoping for a wild manatee sighting. :)

Travel and Our New Digs
After four official days of travel, we have arrived at our destination. Phew! On our way down, we had an opportunity to visit with our friends in Tennessee. Most of two days was spent catching up, enjoying the company, sitting on front porches, and the ever so interesting junk store excursion. I cannot explain why, but the junk store is a place of wonder. It is never the same twice and if you are willing to hunt, you can find lots of bargains. Especially on the organics and natural products. Ahhh. (Sorry. Bunny trail. :)) Our travel seemed to take forever and as always we had a deluge in Atlanta. Why it always rains there when we are passing thru is beyond me. But...once we arrived here, I realized why people snow bird here.
Our area is close enough to the big city to find anything but far enough away that I am only a hop from the water. By the way, the water is warm! I have enjoyed our week so far. The heat hasn't bothered me as much as I had anticipated. Maybe the heat at home bugs me because it is never warm very long...whatever the reason, I am really liking my time so far. Everything is so green! We saw an aloe plant that was my height! Huge and super cool. And, the children have a mission to catch a gecko at least once. Several have been spotted and stalked but no capture yet. :)
Our next order of business is to find an educational and fun place to visit on our first set of off days. I'm keeping my eyes and ears open for possibilities. Any ideas for me? I am trying to steer clear of the obvious tourist traps but Sea World might be an option because of the animals. I guess it needs more research...I have never been there.
For those of you wondering, C had a good birthday. She picked a place to eat out and chose to have her toes painted. She received a few cards here and loved getting mail. She sends a big thank you!! We took a walk and encountered two very large cranes. They did not run or act scared of us, but we were wondering if we could get close enough to touch them. Nope. Once we were in arms reach they sauntered off like they were just testing us. It was neat to be so close.
I hope all is well with all of our friends and family. We miss you all. But the possibility of me finding a location to just plop and stay is increasing all the time. The pretty weather doesn't help. :)

Our Chaotic Life :)
I have often wondered if my friends find my life a little insane. True we move, a lot. And travel for business, a lot. We do a lot of things that are out of the "normal" realm. Things like cloth diapers and wipes, homemade laundry soap, homemade seasoning mixes (taco is a favorite), and hanging clothes out if possible. But what gives me inner humor, if I haven't said it before, is normal is a setting on the washing machine. :) I'm not sure who originally said it but it makes perfect sense in my family.
So, as an update...we have sold our home and are preparing to leave on our next trip. This time to Florida. I understand it's going to be wicked hot but once August is over, I'm hoping for beautiful weather. We closed last Monday and have all of our things in storage. A perfect situation for someone who is technically homeless. Haha. My step-father has been nice enough to allow us to invade his home for the remaining time before we leave. Which, has worked out very well. It has allowed for easy trips to see family and friends and for me to be able to help grandma while grandpa is in the hospital.
We had the opportunity to see the 4th of July parade that is held every year that includes the band from my old high school. There is nothing like seeing the kids doing the very thing that you did and realizing that we really weren't as cool as we once thought. :) I now wonder if we ever knew the actual importance of the day we celebrated.
My babies are growing so fast. A is learning to sew and you would never believe that she hasn't been doing it always! She has a talent and understanding of the art that I will never possess. Her studies are going well and her interest in science baffles and amazes anyone who has an opportunity to talk to her for more than a few minutes. B is proving to be a math and engineering whiz. He is interested in his daddy's work and actually understands when his questions are answered. Hence, why I call him a whiz. :) Most of the engineering science has a cloud of wonderment around it for me. C is getting into school now too. Her big heart can melt me in seconds! She likes to sing, dress up, and have tea parties. We have lots of tea parties. D is officially potty trained!!! I'm so excited. As a result of her hard work, she had her ears pierced. Her choice. That day, she told me that she was a big girl now. Awesome. All of my babies amaze me daily. Where I fail, God seems to fill in the gaps and make sure that they are blossoming. It's nice to know that we aren't raising these babies alone.
As for hubby and I, well...I'm one year closer to 40. That doesn't bother me as much as the gray hair. Vanity suggests that I color or something and my practical side says "why bother". The battle rages some days. LOL. I'm excited to see our new destination. I would like to see the manatees when they come in later this year and I hear that there is a wonderful science museum close by. But again, the battle rages within about a house and garden and being able to grow my own herbs for teas and herbal remedies. It must be my age telling me to settle and not be so gypsy like. HAHA. Hubby is loving his job. They keep him busy but he is never dreading going to the office. A good thing, I think. He is looking forward to spending time doing new things and seeing new places on his down time in Florida. Plus we will be very close to my in-laws while we are there. We always enjoy chatting and playing cards with them. Especially late at night because everyone gets slap happy and it proves hilarious!

Sorry
It has been way to long since I have updated. I have a lot to say, yet I am having a hard time organizing my thoughts. We left Texas in the middle of October and headed home. That is one long trip. Upon arriving home we encountered several challenges including the fact that our Internet line had been severed due to a overly helpful yet careless neighbor. He was mowing the lawn (uninvited) and hit the line with the blade. Long story short, it is expensive to fix and we do not have Internet now. Hence why it has been so long.
We went house hunting and put in two offers that were rejected and one that was accepted. The inspections that were done showed major problems with plumbing and electrical so we decided that we were going to walk away. Bummer. But on the bright side, if God wanted me to stay where we are currently, I need to be content. It just seemed that we were constantly hitting road blocks. I'm holding to the hope of something better later on.
The children have helped put the winter décor in place and they had a grand time. :) We blasted Christmas tunes and gave everything a fresh face. Then we laughed because the tree is so sad and little...and all the ornaments are in one spot. lol. It is so great to know we were bonding and creating memories.
Hubby had an impromptu trip he needed to attend to, so we loaded the car and joined him. I wish I could say we went to warmer weather but instead we ended in Ohio. Today it is a whopping 8 degrees and the wind bites your skin. We are looking forward to his vacation time coming up. Two full weeks of nothing planned and nothing expected.

We Are In Texas Y'all
Surprise. We are in Texas. Hottest part of the year and surprisingly, it is not too bad. Yes, it is hot. But it isn't the melt in a puddle of sweat type of hot. More like standing in an oven, with a breeze. :) Really it isn't so bad. Seriously, I expected something much worse. It is beautiful here. I love all of the ranches and city-scape and the life is relaxed and friendly. Plus I LOVE boots and hats. Lol.
Already we have been to the Fort Worth zoo and the stockyards. The stockyards offer a look into historical Texas and a part of life that is still widely used outside of the city. Everyday they run a cattle drive thru the street. It is amazing how large the horns are on these cattle! Approximately three feet long each. Wow. The children felt that they had to have a real cowboy hat, and since, have worn them everywhere. So cute.
Don't forget that we are close to so much history here too. Within a days travel, we can see almost everything we would like to. The Alamo is a noteworthy site on our list of hopeful destinations. San Antonio river walk has been mentioned several times as a cultural do not miss. Depending on the definition of culture, it might be fun...
We love being able to go to the pool everyday and never having to fear that the water might be too cold. Already we have made some friends and life is settling into a routine. Today we were given a heads up on a couple of home school groups that we might be able to connect with. It seems like we will have plenty to keep us busy. :)

Apple-Spinach Ice Cream
Sounds amazing right? That's what everyone says. However, my wonderful husband bought me a Vitamix for my birthday. It has been several days and I have had an opportunity to play with this cool appliance. It is the best way to include fruits and veggies painlessly. The best news is, I do not add extra sugars. Just the raw ingredients and ice makes ice cream or sorbet. Less ice and you get a smooth drink. I also made a wonderful steaming soup in under 7 minutes. How cool is that! The possibilities are endless.
Short post, but I was super excited about my new toy. I highly endorse the Vitamix. Thanks for letting me scream in excitement!!!!

Washington D.C.
Have you even taken a bike taxi? Well, I had the experience last weekend. Interesting. I'm not really sure that I would like that job but I do bet that he never had to go to the gym. ha-ha. I had never been to Washington and we were lucky enough to be able to cash in some of hubby's frequency points for a few free nights right in the heart of everything. We were a block and a half from the white house, so on the afternoon that we arrived we strolled over for a peek. We also checked out the sculpture displays across the street. After a interesting ride into china town for dinner, we crashed and got ready for the main attractions. Over the next two days we had an exhausting walk all over town. We hit the Natural History Museum, American History Museum, Air and Space Museum, and we tried to get into the F.B.I building and the Office of Engraving and Printing. For various reasons, we couldn't enter inside those two. Maybe next time. We also walked by and admired the Washington Monument, the Lincoln Memorial, the E.P.A. building, the Capitol Building, The Justice Building, and so many other things that I can't even begin. Talk about a true wonderful educational moment! On a sweet note, we found a hidden locals only type spot for lunch. Teaism was such a welcome, wonderful surprise, I highly recommend it to anyone in the area. They were busy but the atmosphere never seemed chaotic. And the menu was huge with several very good sounding gf options. The children loved the mochi with fruit in the middle.
All that to say, we had a great time. On another note, I would like to ask all my friends to leave tips on how to stay motivated on the strict diets that I know so many of us follow. Right now I am struggling with the little child inside of me and although I know the benefits and the ramifications, extra tips and tricks never hurt.
And, if all that wasn't enough, I thought that all of you would like to know that hubby got his "fall orders"... we get to experience Texas next. I have never been on that side of the Mississippi so I hope we find lots of exciting things to do and see. I have an aunt and uncle close to our destination, so I am hoping for a weekend visit. Hubby also has a cousin close. We will have two visits for sure. If you know of anything that we shouldn't miss, please let me know.

Babbling Fun
The days are sunny and hot. But I really have not been bothered by the heat as much as in the past. We have been swimming, walking, visiting friends, seeing more "tourist traps", and visiting favorite spots. The children have collected enough sea shells to keep interested parties entertained for hours. The time we had at Sarah and Matt's was nice. I can not believe how big the children grow in such a short amount of time.
For those who know what has been going on in the personal, here is the update. The doc says that I have been doing real well with my diet. I thought that it might kill me but now that it has been over three weeks, I have the vantage point of being able to look back and say...slow progress but progress. I'm only down 6-8lbs. but my clothes are looser and some of the joint swelling is gone. I have a lot more energy, and my sweet cravings are more controlled. My hubby has agreed that I'm back to a closer version of me and he thought that he would join me on my diet. It cannot hurt him. Yes, it was tailored for me but he will benefit. So part of my temptation is gone if he does not bring things around. :)
Our trip to TN was great. It is always fun to see friends, but four days was too short. Everyone was super tired and happy by the time we had to pack up. The nice thing about hubby's work is that we travel with him and can be close enough to see lots of people and sights that otherwise would be difficult. Williamsburg was pretty neat too. We liked that the shops had the actual craft/talent being performed. Just like it would have then. I think the wig maker was pretty neat. They had a hunt for the children and I must admit that hubby and I got into it as well. We are just giant children after all. :)
That is the short of it. Have a great sunny day. I'm heading to the pool right after lunch...I must work on my tan. ;)

Update version ...?
This post is long overdue. Did you miss me? :) We have been busy doing sewing projects and reorganizing the house and other little things that take up so much time. I wish I had paid more attention when my mother had wanted to teach me how to sew years ago. Maybe I wouldn't be having such a hard time now. But the dresses came out cute...minor things could be better, but... We invented a card holder to keep all the punch cards and loyalty cards out of my wallet, and I made fabric envelopes for my weekly cash purchases. I'm pretty happy with the outcome.
We are once again in another state with hubby. The "house sitters" have a full time job, with the amount of travel that we do. The weather here is warmer but the pollen is killing me!!! I think that pollen is topping my icky list right before heat. Even with rinses and such, I can't breath unless I am inside with the air on. But outside is so pretty. We are in a larger place this time with 3beds and 2 bath. Pretty nice for a "hotel."
My prayers go out for everyone at the Boston Marathon today. I know people who race and that is a scary thing. Seems like we aren't "safe" anywhere and that more than ever we should be grabbing every moment to love our children and friends and family. We never know when God will choose to affect us with a tragedy.
The children are growing so big. The eldest is studying high school biology and coming up with things that blow my mind. (Did I even learn this?) The big man is about to be seven and I just can't believe how happy he is to be doing math and inventing things or making things better. He really is his dad's mini me. The four year old is drama. She is going to make it big someday being a diva. Shoes matter. Hair matters. Accessories matter. Keep in mind that they might not match and/or look even remotely good... but it is a statement. Kinda like... I DID IT MYSELF! :) The youngest is two already. <sigh> talking up a storm and "me do it" is her favorite tag line. I love watching them every day and making memories. They are so comical.
Not a lick of continuity here but I really do switch gears like this, so... Have a blessed evening and I will post again... sometime. :P

Just Musing
I love the winter. Plain and simple. But here, and only here, can you experience snow, negative wind chills, ice, rain, thunderstorms, 58 degrees, and lake effect snow warnings all in the same week. Never a dull moment. We have really learned that two miles in either direction make a huge difference in the weather that is happening. Last Sunday, I had shoveled almost 18 inches off my drive. When we arrived at church, they were still showing grass. I'm not complaining. I love it here. I wouldn't trade this for anything...willingly. We have moved a lot but this is always home. So...we are supposed to get up to 12 inches or so now til Friday. Anyone want to come sledding???

Back In VA
We're back. This time we are staying in a different location, but the accommodations are similar. I have to publicly apologize to all of my friends. I'm so sorry I have not called and/or written as much lately. With the house hunt and the constant travel for hubby's work, I feel a touch out of touch. :) We are not planning anything special this trip but we hope to be back home for the Christmas celebrations. I pray that life will return to normal soon.
On another note...hubby and I are celebrating our 14th anniversary. It is hard to believe that the time has flown so quickly. I am very thankful that we have been able to enjoy each others company for so long. Today's culture does not encourage couples to work on their marriage, but to dispose of it if something is not going according "to plan". I am thankful to have a hubby that loves me. And I love him. ... Recently I ran across a book that we went thru as we were first married. The pastor at our church had recommended it. I think that we might go back thru the books as a reminder to love bilically and stretch our love farther. The Excellent Wife by Martha Peace and The Exemplary Husband by Stuart Scott. They are designed to be done in tandem and open your eyes to a way of looking at your marriage biblically.
I hope all of you have a great holiday season and enjoy all of the blessings given to you. God has blessed us and I pray the same for you.

My First Hurricane
Ahh. My first hurricane. For a storm-a-phobic this is a little unnerving. We leave in a little over a day, but the storm path is predicted to come ashore and hit center just north of here. If you watch the weather channel, you get scared real quick. If you watch local weather predictions for the area, you relax. Who is to be believed? I can handle rain. Wind...a little. But 75 mile per hour wind? Not so sure. So, I pray that we leave before it hits full. Pray with me. It makes me feel better. :) Hubby works so our departure is all up to him. I am praying he gets to come back early. Here's to hoping. Thanks for your prayers.

Finishing Touches
As we come to the end of this trip, I have to admit that I am more than ready to go home. I think that it is a feeling that is shared by all. But, I can not discount all of the fun experiences that we have had. Some blogged about and some not. We have had an opportunity to visit friends, historical sites, a zoo, quaint villages (that still hold true to their roots), festivals, the ocean, and some neat shops. The only things left on my list are the Hollywood cemetery (morbid, I know) and St. Johns Church. Lucky for me... they are fairly close and I can do both in one day. St. Johns Church holds the allure of "Give me Liberty, or give me Death" and the cemetery holds several well known figures in history and a couple of dead presidents.
I was amazed at how easily that this has gone. Every chance that we had, we have been going somewhere. We never made it to Washington D.C. but that will have to wait. I was warned that it might be to chaotic with the little ones right now. (By the locals) So we decided that at this stage, only the oldest would get anything out of it and that we can do it on another trip. I'm sure that this will not be the only chance to see this area of the map. The locals have been helpful in finding things to do that were not "published" in a phamplet somewhere. We were able to mingle and fit in on several occasions.
The Brass Monkey had the most disgusting burger I have ever seen, and on Mondays it is half off. Hubby thought that it was great and my eldest enjoyed hers immensely. It was huge and included so many toppings that it was daunting. Fried egg...on a burger?! The other restaurants were okay, but I won't forget that one. Not that we tried them all, but a few that are unique to here.
So my Virginia posts are over. I still have a little longer here, and one more excursion, but I hope that you enjoyed traveling with us. Maybe next time I can blog more. We will see. :)

Neptune Festival, The Ocean, and Richmond Metro Zoo
We are so surprised at how many things that we have been able to do while here! We had wonderful weather for a visit to the zoo and chose Richmond Metro because it is closer to where we are staying. Although we had a later start than we had planned, it ended up being perfect. As we entered the first trail/path, a keeper was feeding some of the primates and that allowed us to interact with them in a very fun way. The monkey's would chatter at us and expect us to answer them. I could have done that all day! They were very excited to have a snack of fresh fruit and they were very playful. Around the corner we ran into the giraffe. Unlike at another zoo we know, they were very interactive as well. Anybody that approached their area got an up close experience. I turned my head to show the baby and I received a kiss! Talk about friendly! :) All of my children had an opportunity to feed them a little and pet them. We made sure that we were around the otters while they were having a feeding as well. The keeper there had a lot of information for us and the male decided to do a cute climbing trick for his fish. He would climb up the enclosure so that he looked the keeper in the eye and then he would do this hilarious grunt and sniffle thing. The train ride was close by so we decided that it sounded fun. It had views that were only available from the train and we wanted to see it all. Included was a ride through an open range area with gazelle and ostrich. Several other bigger animals were there as well, but they didn't come as close as the others. In fact we had a very unsettling, but very cool, interaction with a male ostrich. He was very curious about us and he followed us so close that we could have touched him! What a neat bird. His bone structure under his wing was wonderful. Those were a few highlights of the zoo. I think it was worth the visit, even if it was a little expensive. Try to be there when the keepers are giving treats, it is so neat to interact with the animals like that.
On the next day, we had another pretty day and we finally had the chance to see the ocean. Virginia Beach was having their Neptune festival which included a sand castle competition. There were some very talented artists. The festival included the usual crafty tents but also some very unique vendors. But first things first. We had to touch the sand and play in the waves. I was prepared for the ocean to be cooler than most bodies of water. I wasn't so prepared for the shock of ice cold that hit my shins! But like always, once you got used to it, it wasn't that bad. The children found shells, the tail of a horseshoe crab, and some barnacles. For a break (ha ha) we rented a surrey. Six of us pedaled this bike like thing down the boardwalk and experienced the view from a distance. Plus that was just fun to do. I'm not into the vendors as much but we did do a little shopping. Got a few good craft ideas. Before we headed home, we played in the water again.
Wet, tired, and sun kissed. It ended up being a great day. As we hit Williamsburg heading home it started to pour and thunder and lightning. It was headed right where we came from. God held it back until we left. Thank You! :) I would love to see the ocean again, but now at least I understand the breeze and sun and sand. Lynchburg
I have to tell ya. We had a wonderful time this last weekend. Friday we packed up our ever present cooler and headed to our friends house in Lynchburg. It took a little over two hours but, the traffic was light and the weather was beautiful! We actually had a drive without the air conditioning on. Small miracle. :) When we arrived we were greeted with hugs and lots of excitement. How fun to see friends after five years! Way to long. After we settled in, we visited and then Mike offered to show us around the campus of Liberty University. They have an indoor, year round, snow tubing and ski center. That's cool. We walked a lot of the campus but were cut off from some areas due to construction that was going on. :( But when our tour was over, Lisa suggested this little Italian place that they had found. The hole in the wall type. She had mentioned that she had called and they had a few options on the gluten free menu, so off we went.
I was shocked! The owner met us at the door and showed us a table out of the way so we could visit longer. Then he asked if he could bring a small television out for the children while we were waiting for our food and such. Bonus points for the boss!!! The menu was great and there were lots of options for everyone. All the sauces were safe and they could make any pizza on the gf crust. Again, BONUS!!! They brought out these bread things that were to. die. for... I can still taste them. yum..... But I wish I could remember the exact name of the place. Villa something. Worth the drive for the food. Not kidding. Even on a Friday night. And I hate going out on busy nights.
So after games, visiting, and the most hilarious time watching my children figure out a wii, we headed to bed. We had planned a trip to Appomattox National Historical Park in the morning. They were offering a special history talk that we wanted to be privy to. Upon arriving, they direct you to the courthouse to pay and receive a map if you want one. I was shocked. Three dollars for anyone over 13 and free for the others. Or, five dollars per car load. Whichever was LESS! Great deal. We arrived within five min. of the start of the first live history talk so we jumped right in. The talk was given in the first person from a federal soldier, stationed at Appomattox, in September after Lee surrendered. For at least a hour and a half we sat spellbound as he told all about his months leading up to that moment and the conditions that he endured. Never once did he break character. Wonderful presentation. After his talk he offered to answer questions and such. We stayed and chatted with him and again he never broke character. Even when we tried to tempt him to. But, we learned so much from his chatting with us. The children even liked it...maybe not the youngest so much....but... The other buildings on the park grounds were neat to see. Life was so different. I think that the jail was the best building. I had all the children behind bars at one point. That was fun. I didn't realize that the jailer lived under the prisoners. He would have never gotten peace and quiet!
Overall, I would do it again. The history park wasn't so big that you were beat by the time you were done. They had a lot of things to explore, and if you wanted, they had information everywhere. Much more than we could digest with four children to keep happy as well. But they enjoyed their time too. I really think that it was time well spent. Happy travelin'. :)

Altered Plans
I must say that we had such big plans for this weekend. Hubby had four days off and we had planned a trip to Virginia beach and the Metro Zoo. But unfortunately we have had rain all weekend. So our plans had to be altered. Instead we have had lots of time to play games and be together. The next time we have off time we are heading west to Lynchburg. Post will follow...

Maymont Estate
We took a trip to see an estate that sits on 100 acres just outside of Richmond. This estate is neatly tucked into what appeared to be a normal neighborhood. That is until you turned down a side street and came face to face with beautiful rolling hills and a massive expanse of lawn and buildings. Although we did not have time (or energy) to walk the entire place, we did take time to see some of the major "attractions."
The Dooley's left the estate to the city of Richmond upon their death, but failed to also leave funds for its upkeep and care. After falling into a sense of disrepair, a foundation was formed and restoration began. Amazingly enough, most of the decor and personal items from the Dooley's were still there and in great condition. I'm sure that I make it sound effortless, I'm also sure that was not the case! However, the restoration was a success. The house was beautiful. We took the opportunity for a guided tour and learned many things about etiquette and social situations, dining "games" and period influences. We had an opportunity to ask all sorts of questions and the guide was knowledgeable and fun. Learning (and teaching) has never been so enjoyable... :)
Aside from the house itself, there were the original buildings that would have been proper for a well to do family in the guilded age. The carriage house and barn and various gardens that would awe anyone that entered. The barn has been set up as a petting zoo for the children and there was some commercial type stuff there but overall, the visit was very nice. I think that my favorite piece of information I left with was that most of the granite used in the building of the estate was quarried on the property. I found that to be quite interesting! Not really jaw dropping, I know, but...
I wish that I could somehow figure out how to include pictures. I took some of the outside but photography was not allowed in the house. It was great to see an older building restored to perfection. I would much prefer it to the new development "cookie cutter" stuff out now. Is this a must see? Maybe. They suggest a donation of five dollars but there isn't a donation police person watching...so technically it is free for the main estate. Not bad for an afternoons worth or entertainment that could capture my whole family. Would I go again? For Sure. :)

I am taking a break from my trip update posting because, as I was reading today I came across this great quote and thought that I needed to share it. Not because I feel high and mighty but because I have always kind of felt this way and never had the right words to define it for myself.
I am known to say I am trying to lose weight or I tried that... but in reality, try is not the right word. What really happens, on average, is that I set out with great intentions and lofty goals and then I get lazy or decide that it isn't worth the sacrifice necessary to make it happen. No matter what the task is that I am "trying" it can usually be boiled down to those basics. So in this case the quote really defines this for me.
"I should" and "I must" are also well defined. I can not begin to tell you how many times guilt comes into play with these statements. Also if it isn't a pleasure to do, the normal reaction is to find a way out of doing it...right? The author again hit this one square.
I guess that there is no point to this post other than, I like the quote. I can definitely see the contridictions in the common statements that I make. (We all do really) A better alternative is to seek Christ and His wisdom and strength. To ask Him to change our lives or situations. (Easier said than done, I know.) But in the meantime, I now have a clear picture of why those particular statements always sounded fake to me. I will "try" to be more careful in the future. :)

"I should" and "I must" are also well defined. I can not begin to tell you how many times guilt comes into play with these statements. Also if it isn't a pleasure to do, the normal reaction is to find a way out of doing it...right? The author again hit this one square.
I guess that there is no point to this post other than, I like the quote. I can definitely see the contridictions in the common statements that I make. (We all do really) A better alternative is to seek Christ and His wisdom and strength. To ask Him to change our lives or situations. (Easier said than done, I know.) But in the meantime, I now have a clear picture of why those particular statements always sounded fake to me. I will "try" to be more careful in the future. :)
